Your tax year, added up

Open Finances, then Tax year, and pick a year. Clarity shows it the way HMRC counts it, from 6 April to 5 April.

  • Turnover, allowable expenses and net profit at the top.
  • Expenses grouped by Self Assessment category, with anything not allowable or left out clearly marked.
  • Income counted when it’s received (the cash basis), and a paid invoice never counted twice alongside its sessions.
  • If your allowable expenses are under £1,000, a note reminds you about the £1,000 trading allowance.
  • The current tax year and the five before it.

Expenses in Self Assessment categories

When you add an expense, you give it a category such as room hire, supervision or insurance. Clarity matches each one to a category on the Self Assessment form. For example:

  • Room hire and insurance go under rent, rates, power and insurance costs.
  • Supervision and accountancy go under accountancy, legal and other professional fees.
  • Travel goes under car, van and travel expenses.
  • Software goes under phone, fax, stationery and other office costs.
  • Marketing goes under advertising costs.

If you or your accountant would put a category somewhere else, change it once and it applies to every year.

Attach a receipt to any expense as a PDF. Costs that repeat, such as a monthly room booking, can remind you when they’re due.

Ready for you or your accountant

  • Download summary gives you one line per category.
  • Download transactions lists every payment and expense in the tax year, with its date, description and category.
  • Both are spreadsheet files (CSV) that open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

Client names are left out of both files. Anything you type into a payment’s description is exported as written, so keep names out of it.

Use Xero? You can send your income and expenses to Xero instead.

What it doesn’t do

  • Clarity doesn’t file your return or send anything to HMRC, including for Making Tax Digital.
  • It doesn’t work out how much tax you owe.
  • It doesn’t track mileage.

What it does give you is accurate totals, in the right categories, to file with or hand to your accountant.

The UK tax year, from 6 April to 5 April. You can look at the current year and the five before it.
